Graduate Trainee Visa Overview
There are a number of visas within the Global Business Mobility category, replacing the previous Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer). These visas allow businesses to bring their foreign workers into a UK branch. The Graduate Trainee visa is one such visa type.
The Graduate Trainee visa allows individuals participating in graduate schemes to come and work in the UK. They need to be on a structured graduate training programme which must lead to a managerial or specialist role.
What Can I Do With a Graduate Trainee Visa in UK?
Use the Graduate Trainee visa to take part in a work placement in the UK. You will only allowed to conduct the work described by your employer in their Certificate of Sponsorship.
You will also be allowed to study, bring your eligible partner and children with you as dependents, leave and return to the UK, and conduct unpaid voluntary work for any of the following:
- A voluntary organisation
- A registered charity
- An associated fundraising body
- A statutory body. These organisations, such as Historic England, are government-appointed bodies
You will not be able to conduct any of the activities detailed below, and it could jeopardise your right to remain in the UK if you do so:
- Apply for public funds (benefits) or the State Pension
- Take a second job
- Change jobs
- Apply for indefinite leave to remain
You will be able to stay in the country for 12 months or until 14 days after the date specified by your Certificate of Sponsorship, whichever is shorter. This, along with a complete list of what you can and cannot do with a Graduate Trainee visa, will be provided to you once your application is successful.

Eligibility Criteria for Graduate Trainee Visa UK
Before beginning the complex application process, make sure that you fulfill all of the criteria detailed below:
- You have been working for your employer overseas for at least three months
- Your employer has a sponsor licence that allows them to sponsor graduate trainees
- Your employer has issued you a Certificate of Sponsorship
- You earn at least £25,410 per year, or 70% of the ‘going rate’ for your role, whichever is higher. This increases to the full ‘going rate’ if you work in healthcare or education
- You work in a job that’s listed among the eligible occupations. The role will also need to be training for a managerial or specialist role
- You can support yourself in the UK, or your employer is providing support
The Points-Based System
Simply meeting these basic eligibility requirements is no longer a guarantee that your application will be successful. Graduate Trainee visa applicants need to accrue 60 points across three categories, each of which is worth 20 points.
The categories are the following:
- Have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship issued by your employer
- Have a job of level 6 (graduate) or higher on the Regulated Qualifications Framework for England and Northern Ireland. Scotland and Wales have their own systems, so you will need a job of an equivalent level if you will be working in one of these nations
- Earn a salary at the required level
Supporting Documents for Graduate Trainee Visa UK
Show that you match this visa’s eligibility requirements by providing evidence through your supporting documents. The UK Government lists the following as documents that are always needed for Graduate Trainee visa applications:
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number, which your employer will need to give to you
- Your employer’s name and sponsor licence number
- A valid passport or travel document. It must clearly display your identity and nationality
- Your role’s occupation code according to the list of eligible occupations
- Your salary and job title
- Evidence that you have amassed enough savings to support yourself in the UK, particularly in the month before you receive your first paycheck, typically requiring a minimum of £1,270 for at least 28 consecutive days within 31 days of making the application. You could use bank statements

- A negative tuberculosis test if you are coming from a high-risk country
- Details of any training you will undertake in the UK
- A valid Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate if you will be conducting sensitive research at PhD level or higher
- Evidence that you have been working for your employer outside of the UK for at least three months before your application. The Home Office may ask for this after you make your application
Evidence of your previous work for your employer could include printed payslips or bank statements. Any online payslips will need to be accompanied by a supporting letter signed by your sponsor.
All of these documents need to be in English or Welsh for the Home Office to process them. Any documents in a foreign language will need a certified translation.
Application Process for the UK Graduate Trainee Visa
You cannot apply to switch from another UK visa type to a Graduate Trainee visa. Instead, you will need to conduct a successful application from your home country. Complete the following application process:
- Confirm that you are eligible for the UK Graduate Trainee visa.
- Head to the UK Visas and Immigration website and download the application form.
- Upload the completed application form, alongside your supporting documents, to the website.
- Pay the visa application fee and submit your documentation.
- Make and attend a biometrics appointment at your nearest visa application centre, where your photograph and fingerprints will be taken. Officials may also retain your passport and other supporting documents while your application is being processed. You may also be able to do this through the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app.
- Await visa processing.
Applying for a Sponsor Licence
If your employer does not currently have a valid sponsor licence, they will need to obtain one before they can issue you with a Certificate of Sponsorship, allowing you to apply for the visa. Your sponsor will also need to be A-rated by the government, and you could lose your Certificate of Sponsorship if your employer fails to maintain this rating while you are in the UK.
Your employer must complete the following process to get a sponsor licence:
- Ensure the business meets eligibility criteria. For example, managerial staff members with a history of immigration offenses may render the business ineligible.
- Confirm whether the business requires a Worker or Temporary Worker sponsor licence. The business may also apply for both types if necessary.
- Nominate the members of staff who will manage the business’ sponsorship duties. The business will need at least two members of staff nominated, who will use the Sponsor Management System (SMS).
- Pay the application fee. This will vary depending on the type of sponsor licence and the size of the business.
Once your business has a sponsor licence, it can issue you with a Certificate of Sponsorship. The business must also ensure that it properly maintains its sponsorship responsibilities to avoid the sponsor licence being revoked.
Application Cost and Processing Time
The standard application fee for a Graduate Trainee visa is £340.
Your application will not be processed until this is paid. You will also need to pay the annual Immigration Health Surcharge (£1035), which will allow you to access NHS healthcare.
After you have completed the entire application process, you will usually need to wait for three weeks before receiving a decision. This processing time may be significantly longer if there are issues with your application or if there is a UK Government backlog.
If you want your application to be processed faster than three weeks, consider paying for the Priority or Super Priority visa services. The Priority Service costs £500 and ensures your visa will be processed in five working days.
If you pay £1000 for the Super Priority Service, your visa will be processed by the end of the next working day, or in two working days if your biometric appointment was on a weekend.
The availability of these services will depend on your home country. Furthermore, neither the standard application fee nor the priority fees will be refundable if your application is rejected.
After Your Application
Once your application is completed, you will need to wait for processing. During this time, UKVI officials will be checking your application to ensure you, your job, and your employer overseas meet the eligibility requirements.
If your application is successful, a ‘vignette’ (sticker) will go into your passport, detailing your immigration status. However, if you used the smartphone app to prove your identity, you will be told how to access your immigration status online.
Both the physical and online vignettes will show that you have a Graduate Trainee visa, along with its conditions and how long you may remain in the UK.
Unsuccessful applicants receive a refusal letter or email. This document explains why the application was unsuccessful, along with whether you may launch an appeal or administrative review to have the refusal overturned.
Common Reasons for an Application Refusal
Overview
If you don’t meet all the requirements for a Graduate Trainee visa, your application will likely be rejected. This includes if your application doesn’t prove the following:
- You have been working for your employer for long enough
- You won’t earn the minimum eligible salary required
- Your job is not listed among the eligible qualifications
- You don’t have the financial means to support yourself in the UK
There are also errors your employer can make, which will make it impossible to get a Graduate Trainee visa. For example, if they don’t acquire a sponsor licence, fail to maintain their sponsor licence, or make errors when assigning you a certificate of sponsorship.
Even individuals who are eligible for the visa and have the proper Certificate of Sponsorship can still have their application refused. This will occur if you make errors in your application. Examples can include submitting expired documentation or not properly completing the application form.
Finally, there are common reasons for a refusal that apply to most UK visas. Examples are detailed below:
- The Home Office is concerned that you will not return to your home country after your visa expires
- You have a history of serious crime or immigration offences

Appealing a Refusal
The UK Government currently refuses around 15% of visa applications. Some of these refusals are made in error and can be overturned through an administrative review or judicial appeal. Your letter or email notifying you of the refusal will confirm if you may launch an appeal.

The Home Office will reassess your application, with a different team responsible for working on your application. This team will acknowledge mistakes made, although that doesn’t guarantee the decision will be overturned if there are genuine and significant problems with your application.
Meanwhile, a judicial review is a more serious matter to engage in. This is where you challenge the rationale behind the decision to refuse your Graduate Trainee visa within the British courts. The three grounds around which you can make a judicial review are illegality, procedural unfairness, and irrationality. The three stages of a judicial review are detailed below:
- Pre-action conduct: essential preparatory steps before you make your judicial review. This may result in your case being settled before it reaches the courts.
- Application for permission, where you ask to begin a judicial review.
- Substantive judicial review hearing, where your case is heard before a court.

Bringing Your Dependents With You to the UK
Graduate Trainee visa holders can bring the following eligible dependents with them to the UK:
- Their spouse, unmarried partner, or civil partner. The UK Government does not recognise polygamous relationships, so you may only bring one partner to the UK
- A child under 18, including any that were born in the UK
- A child over 18 who currently has leave to enter or leave to remain in the UK as your dependent
You will need to clearly show that you are related to your spouse or children. Provide marriage, adoption, and birth certificates. You will also need to show that any of your previous marriages have properly ended, such as through a divorce or death certificate.
You must also show that a partner joining you has been living with you for at least two years. This requirement is waived in certain circumstances, such as if your work or studies have kept you in different places, or living together was not possible in your home country’s culture.
Instead, you will need to show regular communication, financial support for each other, shared care for any of your children, and time spent together as a couple.
Any children joining you in the UK will need to have been living with you, unless they have been away from home for their full-time education. This applies to children who have been at university or boarding school. The child may also not be married or in a civil partnership. Show your shared address by providing your child’s bank statements, driving licence, credit card bills, healthcare registration documents, or official letters from their educational institution.
Finally, bringing dependents to the UK will add to the funds you will need to support yourself. Bringing your spouse to the UK will increase this figure by £285. Your first child will add £315, with a further £200 for each additional child.
Your dependents will need to make a separate application to you through the UK Government website. They must provide your application’s Global Web Form (GWF) or a Unique Application Number (UAN) to ensure they are tied to your Graduate Trainee visa application.
Extending Your Graduate Trainee Visa in UK
The Graduate Trainee visa is a short-term visa option, meaning that you won’t be able to extend it for a further 12 months.
You will need to return home before your visa expires to avoid getting into trouble with the immigration authorities.
However, you may be able to apply for another Graduate Trainee visa if your work placement lasts longer than your visa’s validity. You must return to your home country to do this.
If you are using additional Graduate Trainee visas, be aware that you will not be able to stay in the UK for over five years in any six-year period if some or all of that period has been under a Graduate Trainee visa, or one of the visas listed below:
- Intra-company Graduate Trainee visa (no longer used)
- Intra-company Transfer visa (no longer used)
- Secondment Worker visa
- Senior or Specialist Worker visa
- Service Supplier visa
- UK Expansion Worker visa
As with your initial Graduate Trainee visa application, you will also need to have been working for your sponsor outside of the UK for at least three months before you apply.

Due to the sponsorship process for the UK Graduate Trainee visa, your visa validity is connected to your working for your employer in your specific role. That means if you change jobs or employers in the UK, you will usually need to return home. You may then apply for a new visa if you would like to come back to the country.
