What is a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa in the UK?
A UK Senior or Specialist Worker visa is one of five Global Business Mobility visas available to employees of international businesses and organisations looking to expand their presence in the UK. It has replaced the UK Intra-Company Transfer visa (Tier 2).
It permits you to live and work in the UK for your overseas employer, provided you work in an eligible occupation. You (the applicant) should already be employed overseas and looking to work at your current employer’s UK business.
The UK Home Office must approve your organisation to act as your sponsor while you are living and working in the UK. Depending on your salary, you can stay on this visa for up to nine years. Though it can be extended or renewed, like other Global Business Mobility visas, it cannot be used as a viable route to claim permanent residency.
This comprehensive guide details information surrounding the UK Senior or Specialist Worker visa, including the eligibility criteria for you and your job role, how to and what documents you need to apply, what you can and cannot do whilst in the UK on this visa, how to apply to bring dependents with you, how long it takes to get a decision, and all costs involved in the process.
It is worth noting that whenever you are looking for information regarding any visa application, accuracy is of very high importance. Wrong or misleading information can lead to application errors, and misunderstandings can be significantly time-consuming and costly. It is always worth considering obtaining professional legal advice before going ahead with your application.

Eligibility Requirements for Senior or Specialist Worker Visa
To be eligible for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa, you and your job role must meet strict eligibility criteria.
Applicants
As an applicant, you must:
- Have already been working for your employer overseas – if your salary is below £73,900 you must have done so for at least 12 months
- Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from your Home Office-approved employer that details information about your job role in the UK
- Be at least 18 years old (there is no upper age limit)
- Be able to support yourself when you arrive in the UK – you must have at least £1,270 in personal savings for your first month in the UK unless you are exempt
- Pass a tuberculosis test (if from a listed country)
Job Titles
Your job role must:
- Be on the UK list of eligible occupations
- A genuine vacancy at an appropriate skill level for your experience
- Be at or above a minimum skill level (currently RQF level 6 or graduate equivalent). You do not necessarily need a degree; however, your job must be at least a graduate-level role
- Meet the minimum salary threshold – currently set to at least £52,500 per year or the ‘going rate’ for your job (whichever is higher)
Eligibility Exemptions
There are circumstances where you may be exempt from meeting the eligibility requirements.
For example, if your employer (acting as your sponsor) agrees to cover the cost of at least your first month in the UK, you will not need to prove you meet the personal savings financial requirement.
Or, if your salary is above £73,900 per year, you will not need to meet the 12-month employment requirement.
How to Apply for a UK Senior or Specialist Worker Visa
When applying for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa from outside the UK, you will need to apply online on the UK government’s website using your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number. As part of the application process, you will need to verify your identity and provide supporting evidential documents.
Verifying Your Identity
The process for verifying your identity can differ depending on what country you are applying from and the type of passport you have.
You will:
- Create or sign in to your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account and use the UK Immigration: ID check app to scan your identity document
Or:
- Have your biometric information (fingerprints and photo) taken at a visa application centre
You will be told how to verify your identity when you apply online. It is worth noting that if you have to visit a visa application centre, you will have to pay your travel expenses, and this could be in a country other than your own, depending on where you are applying from.
What Documents Do I Need to Apply?
You must provide evidence when you apply for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa to support your application. For example, you will need to provide the following documents as a minimum:
- A valid passport to prove your identity and nationality
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number (obtained from your employer)
- The name of your employer and their Sponsor Licence number – this will be on your Certificate of Sponsorship
- Your job title and annual salary
- Your job occupation code
- Evidence that you meet the financial requirements. (For example, bank statements)
- Proof of your relationship with your dependents if you are applying to bring family members to the UK with you
- Your tuberculosis test results (if applying from a listed country)
You may be required to provide additional supporting documents depending on your circumstances. You will be made aware of whether this applies to you and what extra documents you must supply during the application process.
Typical examples include:
- Evidence that you have worked for your employer for at least 12 months before your application
- A valid ATAS certificate (if your job involves researching a sensitive subject at PhD level or higher)
- Certified translations (if your documents are not in English or Welsh)
Tips for a Successful Visa Application
To be successful in any UK visa application, you should always ensure that your application is error-free and that you have supplied all requested supporting documents in English or Welsh. Errors on any visa application can cause it to be rejected, and you may need to apply again.
If you do need to reapply, you will have to pay the application fee twice, which is often costly, and a second application can be highly time-consuming.
It is perhaps worth seeking professional help and guidance when applying for any visa as a foreign worker to ensure you have the best chance of being successful.

Can I Bring Dependents to the UK?
Senior or Specialist Worker visa holders are allowed to bring dependents with them to the UK. A dependent is classed as a partner/spouse or a child under the age of 18 (including those born in the UK). Children over the age of 18 can also apply if they currently already have permission to leave or enter the country as your dependent.
All applicants must meet the general eligibility criteria and be able to verify their identity. In addition, as part of your application, you must provide evidence of your relationships.
You don’t necessarily have to be married to your partner; however, you must be able to provide viable proof that you have been in a relationship and lived together for at least 2 years before your application, unless you have not lived together due to work, study, or because of cultural reasons.
To prove your relationship is genuine, you must provide documents such as a marriage certificate or evidence that you have an ongoing commitment to one another. If you are not married, you could include documents to show that you communicate or spend time together regularly.
For example, you could provide evidence of you going on holiday or attending events together. You could also include evidence that you are supporting each other financially or that you are caring for any children you may have together.
It is worth noting that even if your child is born in the UK, whilst you are resident, they do not automatically get British citizenship, and you will need to apply for a dependent visa for them in line with UK immigration law.
If you and your dependents are successful in your application, their visa will usually end the same day as yours.
If your child is over 16, you must be supporting them financially.
They must not be married or in a civil partnership themselves and they should live with you full-time unless they are in full-time education such as a boarding school, college or university. You will need to provide evidence of their address.
All dependents must also satisfy the financial requirements as set out by the UK Home Office for your application to be successful.

How Much are Senior or Specialist Worker Visa Costs?
There are various costs to consider when applying for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa:
Application Fee
Application fees differ depending on your circumstances. For example, if you are applying from outside the UK, the fee is currently set at:
- £819 per person to stay in the UK for up to 3 years
Or:
- £1,618 per person to stay in the UK for over 3 years
If you are applying from inside the UK, for example, if you want to apply to switch to or extend this visa, the fee is currently set at:
- £943 per person to stay in the UK for up to 3 years
- £1,865 per person to stay in the UK for over 3 years
Healthcare Surcharge
When applying for this visa, you are also expected to pay a healthcare surcharge.
The healthcare surcharge allows you to access the National Health Service (NHS) for the duration of your stay. The fee is currently set at:
- £1035 per year for applicants over the age of 18
- £776 per year for applicants under the age of 18
Supporting Yourself in the UK
As previously mentioned, you will need to prove you have the money to support yourself for the first month that you are resident in the UK, as part of your application. Currently, you must have at least £1,270 in personal savings.
If you are bringing dependents with you, you must also prove you have the money to support their first month in the UK. The current figures are:
- £285 for your partner
- £315 for your first child
- £200 for each additional child
You must pay all fees online using a debit or credit card.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa?
If you’re applying from outside the UK, once you have completed your visa application, proved your identity, submitted all requested supporting documents, and paid all applicable fees, you should receive a decision within 3 weeks.
If you’re applying from inside the UK (for example, to extend or switch your visa), you should receive a decision within 8 weeks.
There are some circumstances where your application may take longer, for example, if your documents need to be verified or you are required to attend an interview. Some applications can take longer due to your personal circumstances, such as your criminal history.
You can pay to use the priority service to get a decision sooner (usually within 5 working days), or the super priority service to get a decision by the end of the next working day.
If you wish to cancel your visa, for example, due to an error within your application, your fees will only be refunded if the UKVI hasn’t started processing your application. All decisions are delivered via email with further instructions on what to do next.
You can track your visa application online to stay informed at all stages.
Getting a Decision
You will receive a decision on your visa application via email. What happens next depends on the outcome of your visa application.
For example, if approved, you should follow the instructions set out in your approval email on how to receive your visa and any further steps you may need to take.
If your application is rejected, the email will detail the reasons why and guide you on what your options are.
For example, if you disagree with the decision to reject your application, you may be able to appeal, depending on your circumstances. If you choose to appeal, your application will be subject to a judicial review.
If you do not disagree with the rejection reasons (for example, you agree that it happened due to errors on your form or within your supporting evidence), you may be able to reapply.
If you need to reapply, it is always worth considering seeking professional advice to secure the best chances of success.
What You Can and Cannot Do on a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa
Senior or Specialist Worker visa holders are permitted to:
- Work their eligible job for their Home-office approved sponsor group, as described on the Certificate of Sponsorship
- Take up a course of study or voluntary work (as long as the organisation they volunteer for has charitable status) in addition to their full-time job role
- Use the UK’s National Health Service
- Travel abroad and return to the UK
Senior or Specialist Worker visa holders are not permitted to:
- Access public funds (benefits, state pension)
- Apply for ILR (permanent residency)
- Change your job role unless you are eligible and have updated your visa
- Have a second job (unless you were previously on the Intra-Company Transfer Visa)
If your visa application is successful, you will be sent a detailed list of what you can and cannot do within your approval email, so you fully understand your rights and legal obligations whilst resident in the UK.
Who Can Sponsor a Senior or Specialist Worker?
Your overseas employer can sponsor you, provided they or the organisation/business you work for holds a valid Sponsor Licence (category A).
Employers can apply as an individual or as an organisation, but if it is an organisation that is applying, it must name individuals who form the business immigration team for that company. These individuals then become responsible for maintaining the Sponsor Licence.
To apply for and obtain a Sponsor Licence, your employer must meet strict eligibility criteria. For example, they cannot have any criminal convictions for crimes relating to immigration, fraud, or money laundering. They also must not have had a Sponsor Licence revoked within the last 12 months.
In addition, as a valid sponsoring employer, Sponsor Licence holders will have legal duties and responsibilities that they must comply with to remain eligible. For example, Sponsor Licence holders are expected to monitor sponsored employees.
They must:
- Monitor your immigration status and update the Home Office if they become aware of any changes
- Conduct right-to-work checks and keep up-to-date evidential documents about each sponsored worker
- Keep up-to-date contact details for each sponsored worker
- Track and record the attendance of each sponsored worker, reporting any absences
Switching to the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa UK
If you’re currently resident in the UK, you can switch to the Senior or Specialist Worker visa provided you meet all of the standard eligibility requirements.
Your job role must still appear on the list of eligible occupations, and you must hold a Certificate of Sponsorship from your employer.
You must also be able to prove you have worked for your sponsoring employer overseas for at least 12 months before your application.
If you are currently living and working in the UK on a different visa and you apply to switch to the Senior or Specialist Worker visa, you should not leave the UK until you receive your decision.
It is worth noting that if you currently have dependents with you in the UK, their visa does not automatically switch over even if yours is approved, and therefore, you must apply to switch their visa at the same time.
Senior or Specialist Worker Visa Duration and Extensions in the UK
Successful Senior or Specialist Worker visa applicants can stay in the UK for 5 years, or if shorter, the length of time that is written on the Certificate of Sponsorship, plus an additional 14 days. If you want to stay for longer, you can apply to extend your visa.
There is no limit on how many times you can apply to extend your visa, so long as you do not go over the maximum stay rules. Your maximum stay depends on your salary. Currently, the rules are:
- If your salary is less than £73,900 per year, you can stay for up to 5 years in any 6-year period
- If your salary is more than £73,900 per year, you can stay for up to 9 years in any 10-year period
If you come to the UK on a different Global Business Mobility visa, such as:
- Graduate Trainee visa
- Secondment Worker visa
- Service Supplier visa
- UK Expansion Worker visa
Then, the time spent on that visa is also counted towards your maximum stay.

Can I change jobs if I am on a Senior or Specialist Worker visa?
It is possible to change jobs whilst in the UK on this visa; however, your new job must still have an eligible occupation code.
You should still work for your overseas business (the same employer) or a company with which your overseas employer has a joint venture agreement.
You must also update your visa to reflect your new job role.
