What is a High Potential Individual Visa (HPI)? Overview

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is intended to allow individuals with a degree from an eligible world university to live in the UK. The universities which are eligible under this programme vary according to when you graduated.

In most cases, you will be granted a 2-year visa. However, if you have a PhD or equivalent, you will instead be granted a 3-year visa.

The HPI visa allows you to engage in a number of activities within the UK, such as look for work, engage in paid employment, run a business, volunteer, and leave and re-enter the UK. However, you will not be able to apply for most welfare benefits, work as a professional sportsperson, or apply for permanent residence, known in the UK as indefinite leave to remain. Additionally, the HPI visa cannot be extended.

Eligibility Requirements for a High Potential Individual Visa

In order to be eligible for the HPI visa, you will need to satisfy the following requirements:

    • Have a degree which is the equivalent of a UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, or PhD/doctorate
    • Have graduated from your programme within the last 5 years
    • Have sufficient proficiency in the English language
    • Have sufficient savings to support yourself for the duration of your time in the UK, unless you’ve already lived in the UK for at least 12 months on a valid visa

Note that you will not be eligible to apply for this visa type in the following circumstances:

    • You have previously held a Graduate visa

You have previously been in the UK through the Student Doctorate Extension Scheme

Required documents for the HPI visa

There are a number of documents which you will require in order to apply for the HPI visa. The exact documents will vary based on your personal circumstances, but you will generally require a combination of the following:

    • Valid passport
    • Any other relevant travel documents
    • Proof that you have sufficient proficiency in the English language
    • A statement from Ecctis confirming that your degree or qualification is eligible
    • Biometric residence permit
    • If your partner or children are also applying, proof of your familial relationship
    • A negative tuberculosis test result, in certain cases

How to Apply for a High Potential Individual Visa?

There are a number of steps involved in applying for this visa type. You can submit your application online, via the UK government website. You will need to submit all of the required documentation.

If you are applying from outside of the UK, you will likely also need to book an appointment at a visa processing centre in order to provide your biometric information (your photo and fingerprints).

Once your application has been submitted, it will then be processed. If your application is successful, you will be granted a visa. This will allow you to legally enter the UK.

Note that, if you are already in the UK on a different visa type and are applying to switch to the HPI visa, you will need to apply before your current visa expires in order to maintain your legal status in the UK.

    Processing Time for HPI Visa

Processing times for the HPI visa vary depending on a number of factors. However, if you are applying from within the UK then you will generally get a response within 8 weeks. If you are applying from outside of the UK, a decision will generally be made within 3 weeks.

In order to avoid delays, make sure to submit all required documentation at the time of application and to promptly provide any additional information which is requested.

      Application Costs for HPI Visa

There are a number of costs associated with the HPI visa application.

First, you will need to pay £210 to Ecctis. Ecctis is the service which will verify whether your qualification is valid. This amount increases to £252 if you are applying from within the UK. You will also need to pay a £822 application fee.

Additionally, you will generally need to pay the NHS healthcare surcharge, which allows you to access the National Health Service during your time in the UK. This generally costs £1035.

You will also generally need at least £1,270 in savings to demonstrate that you can support yourself for the duration of your stay in the UK. Note that this amount will increase if you are including your partner or any children as part of your application. This money must have been consistently available to you for at least 28 days at the point of application.

Dependants of High Potential Individual Visa Applicants

In some cases, your partner and children will also be eligible to join you under the HPI visa. They will generally be able to stay in the UK for the duration of your visa.

In order for your partner to be eligible to join you, they will need to fall into one of the following categories:

      • Civil partner or spouse
      • Living together for at least 2 years at the point at which you submit the application
      • In a relationship for at least 2 years but unable to live together, for example due to cultural considerations. In this case, you will need to provide evidence that you are indeed in a committed relationship, for example records showing that you communicate regularly, mutually care for any children, have shared financial commitments, or spend time together as a couple (for example attending holidays or events together)

In order for your child(ren) to join you, they will need to satisfy the following requirements:

      • Reside with you, unless they live away from home for full-time education, for example boarding school or university study
      • Are neither married nor in a civil partnership

Note that you will need to prove that you have sufficient financial means to support your partner and children. In the case of your partner, this will be an additional £285. In the case of children, this will be £315 for the first child and £200 for each additional child. This is in addition to the £1270 which you will need in order to demonstrate that you can support yourself.
