What is the Global Talent Visa in the UK?

The Global Talent Visa route is a professional visa class aimed at facilitating the entry of qualified specialists in the industries of academia and research, arts and culture and digital technology into the UK. It usually only applies to those who have received an endorsement but in some cases, winners of prominent professional awards may apply without one.

Global Talent Visa holders may stay in the UK for an initial period of up to five years, but are able to extend the visa onwards for a further five. After five years in the country, visa holders may apply for Indefinite Leave To Remain and so may settle permanently.

The Global Talent Visa is a separate visa route from the UK Skilled Worker Visa, but often those who don’t qualify for one may apply for the other.

Eligibility Requirements for the Global Talent Visa

A Global Talent Visa application will only succeed where applicants meet set eligibility criteria. These are as follows:

    • The applicant must be aged 18 or over
    • The applicant must either:
      • Have received a professional endorsement from one of six Home Office approved endorsing bodies, OR
      • Have received a professional prize considered prestigious in their industry. There is a set list of prizes which are considered to be eligible

Unlike other professional visas, there is no requirement for the applicant to hold a job, to speak a minimum level of English or to be earning a minimum income.

The applicant will be expected to provide proof of their identification and residence through a valid passport, as well as details of their profession and professional achievements.

    Global Talent Visa Endorsement Requirements

A professional endorsement demonstrates a visa applicant’s prestige and accomplishments in their nominated industry. The application for a professional endorsement is separate to – and must be completed before – any Global Talent Visa application can be made.

For those in academia, there are six Global Talent Visa endorsing bodies in the UK, each endorsing professionals within their relevant field. These are UKRI (UK Research and Innovation), The Royal Society, The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering, Tech Nation and Arts Council England.

Each endorsement application is assessed toward each bodies’ own ‘exceptional talent’ criteria and ‘exceptional promise’ criteria. Dependent on the profession and the applicant’s own circumstances, there are four routes to endorsement:

    • Peer review – as endorsed by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and The Royal Society
    • Senior appointments – endorsement for applicants with a job offer for a senior role at a UK higher education institution or research institute (again, endorsed by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and The Royal Society)
    • Fellowships – endorsement for those with an individual fellowship as approved by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and The Royal Society
    • Endorsed funders – a visa route for researchers who make critical contributions to work supported by grant funding from an eligible funder, as approved by UKRI

Those working in film and television may be endorsed by PACT (Producers’ Alliance for Film and Television); architecture by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects); STEM by The Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, The British Academy or UKRI; arts and culture Arts Council England; and fashion the British Fashion Council.

There is no requirement under the Global Talent Visa eligibility criteria for an applicant to already have a job offer from a British employer in place; however it is somewhat assumed that they will work in the UK within their field eventually (hence taking this visa route).

Family members that are a dependent partner or child may apply to join Global Talent Visa holders, and their visa will last for the same duration of stay.
