The Global Talent Visa route is a professional visa class aimed at facilitating the entry of qualified specialists in the industries of academia and research, arts and culture and digital technology into the UK. It usually only applies to those who have received an endorsement but in some cases, winners of prominent professional awards may apply without one.

Global Talent Visa holders may stay in the UK for an initial period of up to five years, but are able to extend the visa onwards for a further five. After five years in the country, visa holders may apply for Indefinite Leave To Remain and so may settle permanently.

The Global Talent Visa is a separate visa route from the UK Skilled Worker Visa, but often those who don’t qualify for one may apply for the other.

The Global Talent route has seen several practical changes over the past two years that applicants should be aware of before applying.

The Design Industry field is itself a recent addition to the Global Talent route. Endorsement applications in this field opened on 1 July 2026, giving designers working in areas such as product, industrial, graphic, and service design their own dedicated pathway rather than having to fit their applications within the broader Arts and Culture field, as many previously had to.

A further change is on the horizon for settlement applications. Under the current Immigration Rules, applicants relying on the English language requirement for settlement must demonstrate speaking and listening skills at least at CEFR level B1. For applications made on or after 26 March 2027, this threshold rises to level B2, so anyone planning their route to settlement over the next year should factor this change into their timing.

Endorsing body arrangements have also been under review, particularly for the Digital Technology field. The Home Office has periodically retendered the endorsing body contract for this route, and while Tech Nation remains the named endorsing body for Digital Technology under the current Immigration Rules, applicants in this field should check the latest position on GOV.UK before submitting an endorsement application, since this is one of the more frequently reviewed parts of the route.

Home Office fees increased in April 2025, with the combined endorsement and visa application fee rising from £716 to £766. This is split between a £561 endorsement application fee and a £205 visa application fee, and the total was left unchanged in the April 2026 fee update.

The Immigration Health Surcharge, payable separately and calculated for the full length of the requested permission, is £1035 per year for adult applicants and £776 per year for applicants under 18.

Electronic Travel Authorisation has also become part of the wider UK entry framework, and Global Talent applicants and their dependents should check the current guidance to confirm whether an ETA applies to their specific circumstances alongside their visa, since this has been an evolving area of the wider immigration system.

A Global Talent Visa application will only succeed where applicants meet set eligibility criteria. These are as follows:

• The applicant must be aged 18 or over
• The applicant must either:
  • Have received a professional endorsement from one of six Home Office approved endorsing bodies, OR
  • Have received a professional prize considered prestigious in their industry. There is a set list of prizes which are considered to be eligible

Unlike other professional visas, there is no requirement for the applicant to hold a job, to speak a minimum level of English or to be earning a minimum income.

The applicant will be expected to provide proof of their identification and residence through a valid passport, as well as details of their profession and professional achievements.

Winners of certain awards in their profession may bypass the endorsement application and instead proceed directly to the Global Talent Visa application, providing they are able to prove their award.

Each field under the Global Talent route is assessed by a specific Home Office-approved endorsing body, and applicants should apply to the body that matches their primary professional field.

Arts Council England is the official endorsing body across the Arts and Culture, Architecture, Design Industry and Fashion Design Industry fields, though in practice it relies on specialist sector partners to assess applications within each of these fields on its behalf:

• Architecture applications are assessed by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
• Design Industry applications are assessed by the Design Business Association (DBA)
• Fashion Design Industry applications are assessed by the British Fashion Council (BFC)
• Pact (the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television) is closely involved in assessing the Film and Television field, including maintaining the Notable Industry Recognition Awards list referenced in the Immigration Rules
• Tech Nation currently endorses the Digital Technology field, subject to periodic review of this arrangement by the Home Office
• UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Academy jointly endorse the Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science and Medicine fields, with UKRI generally handling fast track applications tied to specific grants and the research councils covering fellowship and academic position routes

Each endorsing body and specialist partner involved publishes its own detailed guidance on the specific evidence it expects to see. It is worth reviewing the relevant body’s published criteria closely before applying, since evidence that satisfies one body will not necessarily satisfy another, even where the underlying achievements are similar.

The exact documents needed depend on the applicant’s field and whether they are applying via endorsement or a prestigious prize, but most applications require the following:

• Valid passport or other travel document establishing identity and nationality
• Endorsement letter from the relevant endorsing body, or evidence of a qualifying prestigious prize
• CV setting out the applicant’s professional or research career to date
• Letters of recommendation appropriate to the applicant’s field, typically three letters for the creative and digital technology fields, or one to two letters from eminent individuals for the research fields
• Evidence supporting the specific field criteria, such as awards, media recognition, publications, exhibition records or grant documentation
• Proof that any required fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge have been paid
• Biometric information, provided as part of the application process
• Tuberculosis test certificate, where the applicant is applying from a country to which this requirement applies

Applicants applying for permission to stay from within the UK will also need to show they have not, or have not most recently held, permission as a visitor, short-term student, parent of a child student, seasonal worker or domestic worker in a private household, since permission cannot be granted directly from these categories.

The Global Talent Visa application process is fairly simple and is typically as follows:

Receive eligible award or professional endorsement

Global Talent Visa applicants must be in receipt of either an eligible professional award or endorsement ahead of the visa application process.

Apply online with supporting documents

The Global Talent Visa application form is completed online through the GOV.UK website. The applicant will be expected to provide copies of various supporting documentation alongside the application to demonstrate their eligibility.

Pay Global Talent Visa application fee

The application fee must be paid online at the end of the application form in order for the application to be processed.

If requested, visit a Visa Application Centre

Applicants may be invited to their local Visa Application Centre to provide hard copies of their evidential documents alongside biometric information such as fingerprints and photographs.

Receive visa decision

The applicant will be informed of the decision whether to grant their visa in writing, with any recourse to appeal detailed if the application has been unsuccessful.

Travel to the UK

Once granted, a Global Talent Visa holder is free to travel to the UK immediately.

A Global Talent Visa application takes 3 weeks as standard if the applicant is outside of the UK, or 8 weeks if already resident.

The Global Talent Visa application fee is £766. For applicants based on endorsement, the first £561 is based at the endorsement application stage and the further £205 when the visa application is lodged.

A dependent partner and dependent children can apply to join a Global Talent visa holder, either at the same time as the main application or separately once the main applicant already holds permission. Dependent partners must be aged 18 or over and meet the relevant partner relationship requirements, while dependent children must meet the standard requirements around care and independent life set out in the Immigration Rules.

A dependent partner’s permission generally runs to the same end date as the main applicant’s permission, unless the main applicant is being granted settlement, in which case the partner receives three years’ permission instead. A dependent child’s permission runs to the same end date as whichever parent’s permission ends first, unless both parents hold or are being granted settlement or British citizenship, in which case the child also receives three years.

Dependants granted permission on this basis can work in the UK, including on a self-employed or voluntary basis, with the same restriction that applies to the main applicant against working as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. They can also study, subject to the ATAS condition where it applies, but have no access to public funds.

Yes. Global Talent permission can be granted for any period the applicant requests, up to five years at a time, and there is no overall limit on how many times permission can be extended or on the total length of time someone can hold status on this route.

To extend, the applicant needs to show they have earned money in the UK during their most recent period of permission, in the same field as their original endorsement, or in a field related to their prestigious prize if that was the original basis for their application. If the applicant was granted their initial permission using an endorsement, that endorsement must not have been withdrawn by the endorsing body, and the endorsing body itself must still be approved by the Home Office at the time of the extension decision.

Unlike the initial application, an extension does not require a fresh endorsement letter, provided the original endorsement remains valid, and the earned income requirement is satisfied.

In most cases, yes, provided the applicant is in the UK, holds a valid endorsement or qualifying prestigious prize, and is not switching from an excluded category. Applicants cannot switch into the Global Talent route from Visitor status, Short-term Student status, permission as the parent of a child student, Seasonal Worker status, or Domestic Worker in a Private Household status.

Applicants switching from Student status face an additional requirement. They must either have completed the course of study for which their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was assigned, or, if studying towards a PhD, have completed at least 24 months of full-time study on that course with a compliant higher education provider.

Switching into the Global Talent route from most other points-based or work routes, including the Skilled Worker route, is generally straightforward from an eligibility standpoint, since the core requirement is simply holding a valid endorsement or prize and meeting the standard suitability and validity requirements.

The Global Talent route leads directly to settlement, and for many applicants it offers one of the fastest routes to Indefinite Leave to Remain available under the Immigration Rules.

Applicants endorsed under the exceptional talent criteria, whether by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, UKRI, Arts Council England or Tech Nation, or granted permission on the basis of a qualifying prestigious prize, can apply for settlement after a continuous period of three years in the UK. Applicants endorsed under the exceptional promise criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation need five years of continuous residence instead.

The qualifying residence need not be spent entirely on the Global Talent route. Time spent on the Innovator Founder, Skilled Worker, Scale-up, International Sportsperson, T2 Minister of Religion, Representative of an Overseas Business or most Tier 1 routes can also count towards the total, provided it was not held as a dependent.

Beyond the residence requirement, applicants need to meet the general continuous residence requirement, the Knowledge of Life in the UK requirement, and the English language requirement, which currently sits at CEFR level B1 for applications made before 26 March 2027, rising to level B2 for applications made on or after that date. Applicants must also still have earned income in the UK in their relevant field during their most recent period of permission, and their endorsement or prize must remain valid and unwithdrawn at the time of the settlement application.
